What Is Minimalist Interior Design?

This style is just like Japandi interior, all about simplicity, functionality but also intentionality. This style goes deeper than just the aesthetics of your home. It’s about stripping away all of the unnecessary while focusing on what truly matters – both in decor and in life.

A minimalist home is clean, decluttered and thoughtful. Here is where the expression “quality over quantity” really comes to life. Instead of filling a space with endless decor, a minimalist home focuses on a few well-chosen, high-quality pieces that adds beauty, function and harmony.

So, minimalism is not only about the aeshtetics, but about creating a home that feels calm and stress-free, a place for us to relax.

The Core Principles of Minimalist Interior Design

If you’re new to minimalism, I wanted to go through the key principles of minimalist interior design. These will help you understand the foundation of this style:

1. Functionality First

The main key in minimalist interior design is that every item in your home has to serve a purpose. No purpose = get rid of it. If you get a new coffee table, make sure it will come to great use – as well as the armchair in the corner. It needs to be both comfortable and well-placed. This is how you should think about all of the items you get in your minimlist home.

Personal Tip: A great question to ask yourself before choosing to keep something is “Do I actually use this or is it just taking up space?” That simple question led to a major home refresh in my home, which means it can in your home as well!

2. Clean Lines & Simple Forms

When choosing furnitures, as well as decorative items – opt for clean lines and simple forms. Make it soft and inviting with geometric shapes.

3. A Neutral Color Palette

The color palette is very important for this style. Choose neutral colors such as whites, soft greys and warm beiges. But in order to give your home a little bit of character, you can still add some color if you choose muted earth tones of colors such as yellow, orange or green.

4. Quality Over Quantity

Minimalism is all about getting a few items, but quality items. I love this way of thinking since it actually becomes cheaper in the long run. I think that if you get the big staple furnitures in a neutral tone – then you can change the style with small decor pieces throughout the years.

However, this requires you to get quality pieces that will last for a very long time. For instance, a quality minimalist modular sofa, such as this one. By getting a modular sofa you also have the possibility to change your sofa over the years – which is great if you’re like me and quickly get bored of your surroundings.

5. Decluttering & Intentional Living

Minimalist is as much about mindset as it is about design. That’s why a minimalist home isn’t just about having fewer items – it’s also about creating a space with intention. Decluttering your home is therefore very important.

How to Create a Minimalist Interior

Okay, to make it a little easier for you I have created a short little guide on how you can create a minimalist interior without getting rid of all of your things. Here’s how you can start:

1. Start with a Decluttering Session

Before you do anything else – it’s important to get in control of what you already own. So, take your time to declutter your entire home and you will instantly feel a huge difference.

To make it easier for you and to guide you I have created a FREE decluttering challenge just for you. Get it here.

Quick Tip: Try the one-year rule – if you haven’t used it in the past year, you probably don’t need it.

2. Choose Multi-Functional Furniture

A minimalist home often have less furniture, that makes it even more important to look for multi-functional pieces when choosing furniture. I will give you some examples:

3. Stick to a Cohesive Color Palette

Sticking to a cohesive color palette is very important no matter the style or room. Otherwise it will become very cluttered and overwhelming. This does not mean it has to be the same color throughout the whole room.

Stick to a neutral color palette on the walls and large furnitures. Then you can add accent colors on your pillows and other small details, choose one color such as a muted green or blue. This will make the space feel calm and cohesive.

4. Let in Natural Light

The one key factor to achieving a minimalist home is the light – it should be bright and airy. One thing you can do to enhance this effect is to se mirror. Place them strategically to reflect the light – this will make the space feel much bigger.

Also, you must ditch the heavy curtains, this makes the space feel smaller. Instead, opt for sheer drapes and also open layouts for a bigger and more airy feel in the room.

5. Be Intentional with Decor

One misconception about minimalist decor is that it is an empty space with only a sofa and a coffee table – that’s not the case. However, you should be intentional with what kind of decor you choose to include.

For instance, instead of filling shelves with trinkets, choose a few statement pieces that brings joy and personality to the room. It could be a large ceramic vase, a statement art piece or a well-placed plant for a natural touch.

Common Minimalist Design Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)

Even with the best intentions, there are a few minimalist interior mistakes you can do to make the space feel too cold and impersonal. I have made a list of common mistakes and how to avoid them:

Mistake 1: Sticking to Only White
Fix: Layer soft textures such as linen, wool and warm wood tones to create depth.

Mistake 2: Thinking Minimalism = Empty
Fix: Minimalism is about balance. Use intentional decor (like a cozy throw blanket or a sculptural lamp) to keep the space inviting.

Mistake 3: Choosing Cheap, Trendy Pieces
Fix: Invest in timeless, high-quality furniture that will last for years, such as this one.
