A beautiful midsummer table setting with blue tableware and a Floral midsummer centerpiece.
One of my favorite holidays here in Sweden is, of course, Midsummer. I know that this is a tradition that’s not as widely spread as Christmas and Easter, but I truly believe that anyone can create their own version of Midsummer. To me, it’s a celebration of summer itself. So, why not create a beautiful midsummer table setting to celebrate this season?
In this post, I’ll share a bit more about what Midsummer actually is and the reason we celebrate it. But no matter if you grew up dancing around a maypole or you’ve only recently discovered this seasonal tradition – it’s definitely not hard to be drawn by the charm of Midsummer.
It’s truly a time where nature is in full bloom, the sun barely sets and life just feels so much lighter, slower and more joyful. So, let’s dive into these beautiful Midsummer table setting ideas and traditions to help you create that dreamy and sun-soaked feeling right at home – no matter where you live.
But first, let’s go through the basics of what Midsummer really is. Midsummer is a Scandinavian tradition celebrated around the summer solstice (usually the closest Friday to June 24th in Sweden).
The tradition is about honoring nature, the sun and community – which also means that the tradition is full of nature. So, think floral crowns, wildflower meadows, long meals outdoors, strawberries with cream and dancing in the grass. It’s almost like a fairy tale brought to life.
Even though this is just a Scandinavian tradition – it is gaining fans all over the world. And honestly, who wouldn’t want an excuse to decorate a beautiful table, gather outdoors and celebrate summer with friends and family?
Now you know the tradition behind this season and why we celebrate it, so let’s go through a few stunning Midsummer table setting ideas. No matter if you’re hosting a full dinner or just a casual Swedish fika moment, here are three table setting styles to inspire your summer celebration:
Let’s start off with the most joyful and colorful Midsummer table setting. If you’re someone that loves cheerful vibes and lots of colors, then this is of course the table setting you should choose. It’s absolutely perfect for families, garden parties or just anyone who wants their Midsummer table to feel like a pure sunshine.
I think you can all hear that this table just screams joy, spontaneity and color – it’s just like a little celebration of all of the colors that comes to life with summer.
If you’re not that much into bold and colorful table settings and love more of a calm, serene atmosphere – then you should go for a minimal Midsummer table setting.
‘This style will capture the beauty of simplicity and will let the natural elements of summer shine through. It focuses more on a slow summer morning in a summerhouse with long dinners under the soft candlelight.
Now this style is so understated but so elegant. It’s all about creating a Midsummer table setting that celebrates the season in a peaceful and intentional way. It’s perfect for quiet gatherings, intimate dinners or anyone who just loves a touch of Scandinavian simplicity.
Now for the last midsummer table setting ides – a classic Swedish-inspired table. So, this is for you if you want a timeless take on it, for instance if you live in Sweden.
It’s a table setting that blends classic elements with a sense of fresh summer charm. It’s a simple, beautiful and steeped in heritage that are perfect for creating that iconic Scandinavian look.
So, of course, this Midsummer table setting is all about tradition, simplicity and overall joy. But all of these small but meaningful touches, your table will feel like it belongs in a Scandinavian summer cottage. A true sun-drenched space, full of flavor and ready for celebration.

Your table might be the heart of Midsummer, but it’s the traditions shared moments that truly make Midsummer so fun and joyful. It doesn’t matter if you’re hosting a large party or just a cozy backyard dinner, by adding a few classic activities you can create that joyful, lighthearted spirit that we all love so much about this season.
One fun thing about this tradition is that we make flower crowns. Usually we all gather to go pick up flowers and then we make the crowns together before we eat. However, I thought it could be a fun idea to just make a flower crown-making station where your guests can make however many crowns they want and in all different colors.
So, set up a table and put all of the tools they will need, so pretty much just floral wire and tape. And then, before all the guests come, you can pick your own flowers and it could be pretty much any flower – but also some greenery to create a balance.
This is really a fun and hands-on activity for all ages! And the best part is that the guests can wear their creations throughout the entire day. Plus, it will look soo pretty on every picture!
Another thing that belongs to the tradition of Midsummer, is easy and playful garden games. These classic outdoor activities work beautifully on a lawn or in a nearby park:
This is really something that will bring laughter, movement and that relaxed, communal energy that Midsummer is all about.
So, in conclusion, Midsummer is a celebration of light, nature and that community connection. With a thoughtfully styled Midsummer table setting, paired with these playful traditions – you can create the most magical night with your friends and family.
