A cozy living room with a beige sofa, two beige armchairs and a seof three coffee tables. A perfect rug to tie the space together and a wooden bench.
Have you ever walked into a room and felt like something was missing – but you couldn’t quite put your finger on it? More often than not, the answer is a rug. If you choose the perfect rug, you can completely change an entire space. It adds warmth, texture and style in a way that feels both intentional and effortless.
However, finding the perfect rug isn’t just about picking something pretty. It’s about understanding what your space needs, how your lifestyle fits into it and what materials and sizes actually make sense for your home.
If you’re like me, then you’ve probably stood in front of your living room, a cup of coffee (or tea) in your hand and wondering why the space still feels “unfinished”. That was me a few years ago before discovering the power of a perfect rug. Once I found the one for my space (a handwoven wool rug that I still love), the whole room finally came together.
In this guide, we’ll dive deep into how to choose the perfect rug for your space – from materials and sizes to shapes and styling tips. This guide is perfect for you no matter if you’re just redecorating or designing a room from scratch. You’ll discover practical advice to help you make confident and stylish choices.
Before you start looking for colors and patterns, take a step back and start over. Think about how you actually use the space.
For instance, in my home office, I wanted a soft rug underfoot that made the space cozy and calm. But in my entryway? I needed something durable and easy to clean – no way I’m vacuuming dirt daily!
It’s also important to remember that different rooms have different needs and your rug should match the function of the space as much as the look. So don’t just go for the look of the rug – I’ve made that mistake!
One of the most important decisions you have in front of you when choosing the perfect rug is choosing the right material. The material affects everything from comfort to durability – but also how easy it is to clean.
Wool rugs are a favorite among interior designers for a reason. It’s soft, resilient, naturally stain-resistant and ages beautifully. It’s also perfect for living rooms and bedrooms – or really anywhere you want a cozy and inviting feel.
Pro tip: Wool rugs may shed a little at first, but it gets better with time. Mine did after about a month of regular vacuuming.
Cotton rugs are very light and affordable – and the best part is that they are usually machine-washable (huge bonus if you have kids or pets). Since they are machine-washable, they’re also perfect for kitchens, bathrooms or as layer of larger rugs (if you love that look). Is this your perfect rug?
Next up we have natural material rugs such as jute, sisal and seagrass. These natural plant-based rugs are ideas for earthy, coastal or boho-style interiors. They are both durable and textured, however, they are not that soft to walk on.
If you want a perfect rug for high-traffic areas or outdoor spaces, this material is stain-resistant and budget-friendly. It’s often used for rugs that look like wool but these can take a little bit more abuse.
Rugs in these materials are often soft and in a vibrant color. They are affordable and very resistant to fading, which makes them great for playroom or areas with lots of sunlight.
Now silk and viscose rugs are absolutely stunning. They have a soft sheen and a beautiful drape. However, they are very delicate and sensitive so put them in a room where it’s low-traffic. It could be a bedroom or a formal sitting room.
When choosing a perfect rug, size matters more than most people realize. An undersized rug can really make a room feel awkward and disconnected, while the perfect rug size will pull your furniture together and also anchor the space. Now, let’s go through the different rooms in your home and discuss the sizes of the rugs.
In your living room, the rug should ideally extend under the front legs of all major furniture, such as the couch and armchairs. In larger spaces, go bigger and have all legs on the rug. This is because having the furniture anchored on the rug helps define the seating area, creates a cohesive look and makes the space feel balanced and intentionally designed.
In your bedroom, the rug should go at least halfway under the bed and extend out past the sides. Having a rug under your bed (and extending on the side) creates a soft and cozy landing when you get out of bed. It also visually grounds the bed within the room and adds a sense of warmth and proportion to the overall layout.
Another option is to have two smaller runners on each side of the bed. This can be a great choice for smaller rooms or for adding a touch of symmetry and style without the need for a large area rug.
In your dining room it’s important to think about the rug being big enough for chairs to be able to stay on the rug when being pulled out. If not, then it will be something you’ll be irritated on – trust me!
Rule of thumb: Add 24-30 inches to each side of the table to find your ideal rug size.
when choosing rug size for your entryway and hallway, think long runner rugs. This will create a visual interest and softness, while also leading you into the house. Just make sure it’s wide enough to not look awkward in a narrow space.
Step 1: Measure Your Room Dimensions
Use a tape measure to get the length and width of your room. Write down these numbers.
Step 2: Measure Your Furniture
Measure the length and width of the furniture pieces that will sit on the rug.
Step 3: Decide How Much Rug You Want Exposed
Do you want the rug to go under all furniture legs or just the front ones?
Step 4: Calculate the Rug Size
Subtract a few inches from your measurements to avoid the rug extending too far.
Step 5: Mark the Measurements on the Floor
Use painter’s tape to visualize the rug’s size in your space before buying.
When choosing the perfect rug for all of your different rooms, it’s important to understand all of the standard sizes and how they best fit into each room. This rug measurement guide will help you to quickly understand what dimensions work best for each room in your home.
Room Type | Rug Size (inches) | Rug Size (cm) | Notes |
Living Room | 8′ x 10′ | 240 x 300 cm | Fits under front legs of sofa and anchors the space. |
Dining Room | 6′ x 9′ | 180 x 270 cm | Allows chairs to stay on the rug when pulled out. |
Bedroom (Queen) | 5′ x 8′ | 150 x 240 cm | Partially under the bed, extends out on the sides. |
Bedroom (King) | 8′ x 10′ | 240 x 300 cm | Covers base of bed and nightstands. |
Hallway | 2’6″ x 8′ | 75 x 240 cm | Long and narrow, ideal for hallways and walkways. |
Entryway / Foyer | 3′ x 5′ | 90 x 150 cm | Small welcoming rug that defines the entrance space. |
Knowing how to measure rug areas isn’t just about grabbing a tape measure – it’s also about visualizing how the rug will sit in relation to your furniture and the overall size of the room. Use this chart above as a quick reference when planning your next rug purchase. It will make it so much easier to choose a size that looks beautiful and functions well in your space.
So, remember to save this chart for future rug purchases!
Well, size and material isn’t everything – the shape of the rug does also matter. Rectangular rugs might be the most common shape, but don’t be afraid to play with shape. It can completely change the dynamic of your room.
As I just mentioned this is the most common shape. It’s classic and versatile and therefore perfect for most living rooms, bedrooms and also dining rooms. These are rooms where the furnitures also are rectangular, such as a bed, a sofa and a dining table.
However, if you want to make your space a little more soft, then go with a round rug! These are great under round dining tables, in nurseries or even in small conversation areas.
These are very elegant and slightly less expected than both a round rug and a rectangular one. They are also great in longer rooms or under a long dining table. It makes the room softer.
These are absolutely perfect for hallways, kitchens and also bedrooms. You can also use them to visually elongate a space or even add a visual interest in narrow areas.
Not that you know what material, size and also shape to look for, you of course need to know how to style it. So, let’s talk style.
Layering rugs have been a trend for many year and let me tell you – it isn’t going anywhere and I love it. To create a beautiful layer, start with a large, neutral base (such as jute), then you can add a smaller patterned rug on top of it. This will give the space so much character, but also a sense of depth, texture and coziness.
You can either make a rug the star of the show or it can quietly complement everything else. For instance, a bold, coloful rug with intricate patterns can become the focal point of a neutral room, while a subtle, tonal rug can tie the space together without drawing too much attention. So, decide what role you want it to play.
For instance, in small living spaces, strategically placing the perfect rug can help define different functional areas, such as a lounging zone or a reading nook. Want to learn more about how to decorate a small living room? Check out this post!
