Large white sofa with many pillows and a throw blanket. Lots of candles in the living room.
Do you also find it hard to decorate your living room in order make it both cozy and inviting? Maybe you feel like it just looks empty and naked. I’ve felt it too! The living room is often very big and spacious – therefore it could be hard to find furniture and decorations to fill all of this space. But with a few hacks you can transform this space into a cozy living room that feels both complete and inviting. Here’s how!

One of the quickest ways to make a room feel more complete is of course by adding an area rug. In a magical way it instantly adds both warmth and texture. However, one thing that is important to think about when getting a rug is the size. It’s important that it’s not too big and not too small.
You should choose one that’s large enough to anchor your main seating area but make sure it doesn’t overwhelm the space. Ideally, the rug should extend under at least the front legs of your furniture, creating a cohesive and grounded look.
If you already have a rug but the space still feels flat, try layering. Place a smaller, patterned rug on top of a larger neutral rug to add depth and interest. But if you don’t like the layered look you can go for a rug with more pattern on it – neutral or colored.
If the walls are empty, the room will also feel empty. But there are a few different things you can do to instantly make the walls – and the room – feel complete. One of the easiest ways to fill the walls is by adding a gallery wall. You can either mix and match pieces like framed photos, abstract paintings and personal photos, or you can go with one of them to create more of a clean look – the choice is yours.
Floating shelves are not only functional, but also a great way to style your walls. You can use them to display books, plants and other deocrative objects. These shelves are also great to rotate seasonal decorations.
Pro Tip: When styling shelves, group items in odd numbers and vary heights for a balanced look.
If you want to make a bold change to your walls, consider adding panels – my personal favorite. For a neutral look, you can paint the panels the same color as the rest of the walls. Alternatively, you can add panels to the lower half of the wall and use wallpaper above them. This approach allows you to showcase your personal style while adding character to the space.
I love cozy corners! They make a space feel, well – cozy. A cozy corner instantly makes a room much more inviting. To create one, you can add a comfy chair, a small side table, and a table lamp in an empty corner to create a charming reading nook. For extra coziness, simply add a throw blanket and a pillow.
Incorporate pieces like ottomans with hidden storage or maybe a nesting table. These multifunctional furniture items not only fill the space but also add to the room’s functionality. They also help with organization, keeping your living room both stylish and practical.living room both stylish and practical.
I have always hated having plants in my home, simply because I thought I couldn’t take care of them. However, I’ve now realized the importance of having plants in your home, and that it doesn’t have to be that hard – and as always, Google is your friend.
Plants are actually an amazing way to soften a space and make your room feel alive, especially an empty one. Even just a single statement plant, such as a fiddle-leaf fig, or a group of smaller plants can transform a corner.
An easy way to give your space warmth is by adding natural materials such as wooden trays, wicker baskets and even stone vases. These materials pair beautifully with plants and help create a cozy and grounded feel.
If you are just relying on one overhead light it can leave your living room feeling stark. It’s therefore better to layer your lighting with floor lamps, table lamps and even string lights for a softer glow. I almost never use the overhead light anymore, only when I need much light in the living room – which is almost never.
Use lighting to emphasize your room’s features. For example, place a small lamp on a bookshelf or use wall sconces to frame a fireplace.
Pro Tip: Invest in dimmer switches to adjust the lighting and create the perfect mood for any occasion. We have Philips Hue which both me and my boyfriend love. You can really adjust the light after your mood.
Adding textiles can do so much for a space. Throw pillows, blankets and curtains are your best friend for making a living room feel and look cozy. You can also mix and match with different textures – this will make the space more interesting. For instance, velvet, linen and chunky knits.
It’s important to always add your own personal touch to your space. You should decorate with items that reflect your personality, such as framed photos, travel souvenirs, or unique finds from thrift stores. These personal touches make your space feel like home.
A cozy space doesn’t mean cluttered. You should always be intensional with all of the pieces you choose and also keep in mind to edit your space regularly. It does not have to mean that you should buy new thing every time you edit – sometimes it’s enough to swich place on a few items and your space will get a whole new look.
It’s also important to remember that if something doesn’t spark joy or fit the vibe in your home, it’s always okay to let it go. I actually declutter my space almost every month to keep only the items that I actually use or bring me joy.
Personal Tip: I have a habit of rotating decor every season. It keeps the room feeling fresh without requiring a complete overhaul.
Transforming an empty space into a cozy living room is all about balance. By anchoring your space, styling the walls, creating cozy corners, and layering lighting and accessories, you can turn a naked room into a warm and inviting haven.
