A mid century modern living room with an orange armchair, a teal sofa in the background. Interior design ideas.
Sometimes it can be hard to know what’s missing in a home, or why it doesn’t quite feel as cozy or put-together as you’d like it to. Don’t worry, I’ve been there too. That’s why I created this post where I share 35 interior design ideas that will truly help you make your house feel like a home.
Some of these tips are so quick that you can do them in an afternoon, while others are fun little projects for a rainy weekend. Think of this as me sharing all my favorite tips that I’ve learned for a few years with you, the same way I would tell a close friend. So, grab a cup of coffee (or a glass of wine, I’m not judging) and let’s dive in.
To make it easier to find the tips you’re looking for, I’ve divided this post by different areas of the home, like the living room, kitchen, and bedroom. Feel free to scroll through the table of contents below and jump straight to the section that speaks to you.
Your living room is literally where life happens. It could be Netflix marathons, charring with friends, lazy sunday mornings or just a cozy night home alone. So, let’s make it feel as cozy and beautiful as possible.
One of the biggest mistakes I see is when all of the furniture is pushed up against the walls, and honestly, I get it, it feels like the most natural way to arrange a room. However, try pulling your sofa out just a little, or arranging chairs so they “talk” to each other. I think you’ll be surprised at how much warmer the room feels.
Honestly, I have some kind of obsession with throw pillows. But hear me out, it’s one of the most easiest ways to refresh your living room without buing new furniture. Also, try mixing a chunky knit with something smooth like velvet, it will instantly add some depth to your space.
A rug really grounds the space and makes everything feel intentional. And my rule of thumb? Well, the rug should be big enough that at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs sit on it. It just looks so much more pulled together that way.
I think that we all got a little scared of color because of the neutral trend. However, you should not be afraid to experiment a little! I mean, I bought a blue sofa, and it’s the best decision I’ve made. Neutrals are timeless, but a pop of color can be the one thing that makes you smile every time you walk in.
If you only have one overhead light, the room can really feel flat. Instead, add a floor lamp by your reading chair or a small table lamp in the window. This will give a softer light in the evenings. Trust me, having multiple smaller light sources makes the movie nights so much cozier.
Now think of your coffee table as a mini stage, it’s where you can play with books, candles and little objects that just shows your personality. I usually follow the “rule of three” – one stack of books, one candle, one decorative object. It’s very easy and always chic.
Even if you’re a self-proclaimed plant killer (been there), there are actually plenty of easy options, such as pothos or snake plants, even a monstera is easy to care for! Honestly, plants are so important, thet bring so much life into the room in a way no other decor can.
Let’s move on to the bedroom, this should really feel like your personal safe space. It’s the place where you go to recharge and calm down, so let’s make it feel special.
You know that feeling when you slide into fresh sheets that feels just like silk to your body? That’s why bedding is worth a little splurge. I swear by linen in the summer and cotton satin in the winter.
Yes, I’m back on pillows and throws again! In the bedroom they really make your bed look styled in seconds – plus doing the bed in the morning really wakes you up. So, a mix of big and small pillows plus a throw at the end of the bed will give your bedroom that instant hotel vibes.
Nothing kills a relaxing atmosphere more than a harsh overhead light. Instead, go for a pair of bedside lamps or even fairy lights can make the whole space feel softer.
I have this reindeer fur that me and my boyfriend bought on a winter market up here in northern Sweden. Every time I see it, it makes me smile. So, pick something that feels like you, it could be a painting, a print or even your own photos.
Well, even a small rug by the bed makes those early morning a little less chilly. Plus, it makes the room look instantly more finished.
Actually, if you have a clutter-free space around you when trying to sleep, it’s a lot easier to relax. So, design the space with lots of storage and only a few decorative items on display. This way you will fall asleep much faster.
If you have a tiny bedroom, then mirrors can be a game changer for you. This will instantly make the room feel much bigger, but still keeping that cozy and warm feeling.

As we always talk about, the kitchen, along with the dining room, really is the heart of a home. It’s the place where memories are made. That’s also the reason as to why it is so important to spend some extra love decorating these spaces.
Maybe you’ve moved into an apartment where you can’t renovate, or you don’t have the money to renovate the entire kitchen in your house. However, you can make small changes that will make the biggest difference. For instance, the cabinet hardware. And you can get them for pretty cheep on amazon, like these ones.
This is the perfect way to add some personality to your kitchen. Here, you can display things that you love a little extra, maybe a pretty plate, a plant and a cooking book?
If you want another tip on how to renovate on a budget, get some peel-and-stick tiles for the backsplash. This will make a huge difference and they’re so easy to add. Perfect if you live in an apartment!
One way to really add some character into your dining room is by having a mix of different chairs. However, it’s important to keep a cohesive theme and style, otherwise it will look cluttered. For instace, different wooden dining chairs.
Also, a bold, large statement light fixture will do so much to the space. It will become the center of the room and make it feel styled and thoughtful.
I know that there’s a lot of coffee lovers out there (I’m not one of them) so making your own coffee station can really add some luxury into your everyday.
Then of course, some greenery to add life to your home. Maybe some fresh flowers on the table or a large plant in one of the corners?
Often you might forget about the entryway, you think it’s not that important since you don’t hang there a lot. However, it’s the room that sets the tone for hte rest of the home. The entryway should make you feel like you’ve really come home, it should be welcoming.
Most hallways are pretty small so by adding a statement mirror will make the room look bigger. You will also have a mirror to check your outfit in, as well as adding a statement piece to your decor. So, there’s a lot of perks with a mirror in the hallway.
This is great for both styling and some storage. You can put some baskets underneath with everyday gloves, hats or shoes in. On top of the table you can add a nice tray for quick access of the keys, as well as a large table lamp or a bouquet of flowers.
Hooks are a great and minimalist solution for hats, coats and bags. But don’t overhang these, make sure to have a hidden storage for most of your coats as well, otherwise it will easily get cluttery.
You will also need to get some warmth and fabric into the hallway, for instant a patterned runner. This will really add some character and invite you into the house. Also, add a door mat to gather all the dirt from under your shoes.
Well, even a hallway can use some artwork. It will help give the space some character and personality.
I actually think the hallway is one of the few places where an overhead light really works, paired with a few smaller light sources, of course. In the morning, that bright overhead light can feel so refreshing and help wake you up as you head out the door.
Checkered tiles is something I absolutely love in a hallway, it adds so much warmth and personality to the space. I also think it’s important to be brave enough to go for bold flooring, it can completely change the look and feel of your home.
You can actually make your bathroom feel really luxurious and cozy just by changing a few simple things. It’s such an underrated place to relax, just imagine stepping into a hot shower after a long day, candles flickering, and everything looking calm and inviting.
Well, in order to create that dreamy bathroom and make it like a home spa, you need to add some spa-like accessories. This could be fluffy towels, a bath tray and a candle.

I believe those plastic shower curtains can look a little cheap and it won’t give you that luxurious feeling in the bathroom. So, instead go for one in fabric (like this one) for more of an elevated look.
Baskets are so underrated, you can use them for just about anything! I love storing toiletries or rolled towels in them. They’re practical, but they also add a cozy, organized feel to the bathroom.
And as always, in every room you need to add a pant. It does so much to the space. However, if you’re renting, you might not have a window in the bathroom which makes it a little more difficult for a real plant to survive. Instead, go for a realistic plastic one, like this one or this one.
Even in the bathroom you can use peel and stick tiles and it can really make or break the bathroom. Invest in a few tiles, either for the floor, the wall or both. It will really make such a big difference and there are so many beautiful ones, like this one.
This will make your bathroom really feel like a spa, so every shower or bath can feel like a little self-care moment. I love these!
A ladder shelf can be both practical and decorative. You can use it to display beautifully rolled towels, and add baskets as extra storage. It’s just the perfect addition to your bathroom.
